What will your heirs keep? Calculated with every heir, every share and the family home at once.

Most calculators know one heir and one figure. In reality a spouse and two children inherit, and the largest item is a house that someone goes on living in. That is exactly what this calculator works out: allowance, tax rate and tax for each heir separately, with the family home as its own, tax-free part.

Your family, your figures.

With “Copy link” you take the result with you: anyone who opens the link sees exactly these figures. None of it leaves your browser: the details sit only in the address bar, nothing is stored.

The family home stays tax-free for a spouse and children if they live in it themselves for ten years; for children, up to 200 m².

Who inherits, and with what share?
  • 50 % · €600,000

  • 25 % · €300,000

  • 25 % · €300,000

The shares are set in proportion: 50/25/25 and 2/1/1 come to the same thing.

The heirs keep
€1,200,000

The tax-free allowances still cover this. No inheritance tax falls due.

Every ten years the same allowances are available again. With this split, that comes to €1,300,000. Start early and you give away in your lifetime what would otherwise be taxed.

Simplified: personal allowances and the family home. The pension allowance of €256,000 for a spouse is deliberately left out. It is reduced by the value of the survivor's pension, and with a statutory pension usually nothing is left of it. Earlier gifts and business assets are missing too. Not tax advice: the binding tax is set by the tax office.

With €1,200,000 and this split, no inheritance tax falls due.

What lies behind it

Three sections of the law, no more.

€400,000
Tax-free allowance per child and parent, unchanged since 2009.
7–50%
Tax rate, depending on the family relationship and the size of the inheritance.
10 years
until every allowance for gifts is fully available again.

Why the allowances are worth less and less in real terms, and what the Federal Constitutional Court reviews in October, is on German inheritance tax 2026.

Common questions

Answered briefly.

How high is my tax-free allowance?

A child inherits €400,000 tax-free from each parent, a spouse €500,000, a grandchild €200,000. Siblings, nieces, nephews and everyone else come to €20,000 (§ 16 ErbStG). These figures have stood unchanged in the law since 2009.

Does the family home really stay tax-free?

If the spouse or child lives in it themselves for ten years, yes, for children up to 200 m² of living space. Anyone who moves out, lets it or sells it earlier has to pay the tax after all. For siblings or grandchildren the exemption does not apply.

Why does this calculator leave out the pension allowance?

Because the figure almost always misleads. Under § 17 ErbStG a spouse has a further €256,000, but that amount is reduced by the capital value of the survivor's pension. With a statutory pension, usually nothing is left of it. What applies in your case is set by the tax office.
