How much of your money is really protected? Work it out for all your banks in one go.

€100,000 per customer, per bank is protected by law. From the 100,001st euro you no longer have a legal claim. Then all that counts is whether the banks step in voluntarily. Two things shift this limit: a joint account, and money that has only just come in from a house sale, an inheritance or a severance payment.

Your banks and balances

  • Limit €100,000 · protected €100,000 · without a claim €150,000

Total balance
€250,000
Protected by law
€100,000
Without a legal claim
€150,000

For €150,000 you are relying on voluntary promises from the banks. You cannot go to court for this amount.

Simplified, per customer, per bank. Securities in your custody account belong to you anyway and do not fall under this limit. Not legal advice.

Of €250,000, €100,000 is protected by law. For €150,000 there is no legal claim.

What lies behind it

Where the figures come from.

€100,000
per customer, per bank, a legal claim.
€200,000
with a joint account held by two people, because each share counts on its own.
up to €500,000
for six months after certain incoming payments, for example from a house sale.

Why this is more than theory: bail-in, Greensill and the Volksbank Brawo case are on the page bank failure and deposit protection.

Common questions

Answered briefly.

Does the limit apply per account or per bank?

Per customer, per bank. Whether you have one account or five makes no difference: all balances at the same institution are added together and are protected up to €100,000 in total. Two accounts at two different banks, by contrast, are protected twice.

What applies to a joint account?

Each holder's share counts on its own. Unless agreed otherwise, each holder owns half. With two holders, €200,000 per bank is protected by law (§ 7(4) of the German Deposit Guarantee Act, EinSiG).

I have just sold my house. Am I protected only up to €100,000?

Not for six months. Payments in from the sale of a home you lived in yourself, from marriage, divorce, retirement or insurance benefits are temporarily protected up to €500,000 (§ 8(2) EinSiG). After that, the normal limit applies again.
